Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman Go Head-to-Head In ‘Deadpool 3’ Set Pic

Deadpool 3 will reunite Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman for the first time since 2009’s Wolverine: Origins.

Reynolds revealed in September 2022 that his real-life pal would join the movie via a comedic announcement video. “Hey Hugh, you want to play Wolverine one more time?” Reynolds asked Jackman in the clip, to which he replied, “Yeah, sure, Ryan.”

The film will mark the introduction of X-Men characters into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy characters previously linked up in the Disney-owned MCU, which is produced by Marvel Studios. The mutants, meanwhile, previously lived in 20th Century Fox’s X-Men universe. However, Disney now owns Fox, so Deadpool can exist alongside the Avengers for the first time.

“It’s not like adding Hugh Jackman to a movie like this is a hard sell. It’s an immediate and emphatic, unqualified yes,” Reynolds told Collider in November 2022. “It’s a lot of moving parts and Fox and X-Men and all that kind of stuff that Marvel needs to sort through. A lot of red tape in order to make that happen. And they did it.”

Deadpool 3 was initially set to hit theaters on November 8, 2024, but Marvel Studios announced the film will hit theaters earlier than anticipated. The new release date is May 3, 2024.

Yes, despite the fact that the Greatest Showman actor said he’d retired the adamantium claws for good after 2017’s Logan, he will be playing the character one more time.

“A little part of me now thinks I’d be better at it,” Jackman told Variety in October 2022. “Is that arrogance of age or something? Wolverine’s a tortured character — more tortured than me. But I always get the feeling of him being comfortable in his own skin. And I feel more comfortable in my own skin now, even though it’s messier.”

Reynolds’ frequent collaborator Shawn Levy will take over directorial duties from David Leitch. The Stranger Things writer directed 2021’s Free Guy and 2022’s The Adam Project. Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick will write the script.

The problem with Jackman returning as Wolverine is that the hero died in 2017’s Logan. However, fans will remember the movie took place in 2029. The third Deadpool is set in present day.

“We’ve figured out a way to do it that’s Hugh Jackman-approved and Kevin Feige-approved where we’re completely protecting the legacy of Logan the way it was left off,” Reynolds said during a November 2022 appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. “I wouldn’t mess with that. I’m really excited.”

This theory was started not only based on Reynolds’ friendship with the pop star but also a shared location. The promo video announcing Jackman was filmed in the same location as Swift’s All Too Well: The Short Film. If she wants to appear, the actor said he’s game to give her a role. “Are you kidding me? I would do anything for that woman. She’s a genius,” Reynolds told Entertainment Tonight in November 2022.

Jackman explained his out-of-the-blue call to Reynolds during a December 2022 appearance on SiriusXM’s The Jess Cagle Show. “I had a week’s vacation from [Broadway’s The Music Man] and I was driving out, and it just came to me like that. I rang Ryan as soon as I arrived and he was floored,” Jackman recalled. “Interestingly, he was just about to have a meeting with Kevin Feige at Marvel at 5 o’clock that afternoon about the Deadpool movie. And so he goes, ‘This is really good timing, but are you really sure? Cause I don’t wanna say anything.’ I said, ‘I’m a hundred percent sure.’ And I dunno why, because I was a hundred percent sure I was out before. And then all of a sudden I was a hundred percent in.”

He continued, “If I’m really honest, I’d announced Logan was my last, and then I went to see the Deadpool movie and I was 20 minutes in. I was like, ‘Christmas.’ First of all, I loved the movie, but all I could see was Nick Nolte, Eddie Murphy in 48 Hours. I was like, this is something I haven’t done, we haven’t done, with the character. That’s the kind of dynamic we haven’t had before. But then I just put it aside. I was like, ‘No, no, no, I’m done.’ And then we made Logan, I was super happy with her, but all because of this device they have in the Marvel world of moving around timelines, now we can go back because, you know, it’s science. So I don’t have to screw with the Logan timeline, which was important to me. And I think probably to the fans too.”

What fun would that be? Jackman teased the tense dynamic on the “Empire Film Podcast” in December 2022.

“We’re opposites, hate each other. I’m just talking from my perspective,” he said. “[Logan is] frustrated by him [and] wants to be a million miles away from him or wants to punch him in the head. Unfortunately, he can’t be a million miles away from him in this movie, so I’m probably going to punch him in the head a lot.”

Deadline reported in March 2023 that the Succession star would join the upcoming film. Further details about Macfadyen’s character have not been revealed.

Garner joined the Deadpool 3 cast as Elektra — 20 years after she first played the assassin in 2003’s Daredevil. She returned as the sai sword-swinging hero in the 2005 spinoff, Elektra.

“Moms of Future Past. Welcome to Deadpool, Jennifer Garner,” Reynolds’ Maximum Effort production company shared in a since-deleted tweet on July 7. Reynolds and Garner previously worked together on The Adam Project.

Jackman’s Wolverine was photographed stabbing Reynold’s Deadpool in the face in July 2023 set pics from a movie fight scene. The third installment will seemingly continue the series’ meta commentary, as the battleappeared to take place in front of the 20th Century Fox logo — a reference to the film move to the Disney-owned MCU.
